Hey everyone, TJ here with Sanctified Homes and Construction! Today, we’re diving into an essential topic for anyone serious about building a durable, energy-efficient home: exterior insulation and rain screens. We’re out at the Bushel Hill Haven project, where we’ve just started applying the exterior insulation blanket and installing the rain screen detail.
These two components are game-changers for long-term performance, comfort, and durability. Let’s break it all down.
Think of exterior insulation as putting a warm winter jacket on your home. It’s not just about stuffing insulation between the studs; this outer blanket prevents thermal bridging, a phenomenon where heat escapes through the wooden framing of your walls.
Improved Energy Efficiency: Reduces heating and cooling costs by keeping your home’s interior temperature consistent.
Enhanced Comfort: Eliminates cold spots caused by thermal bridging.
Durability: Protects your home’s structure from temperature fluctuations and moisture damage.
At Bushel Hill Haven, we’re using Halo Exterra insulation, a GPS foam product with an R-8 value. This insulation helps maintain the home’s thermal envelope and supports a healthier indoor environment by reducing energy use.
A rain screen is a critical yet often overlooked detail in home construction, especially in Wisconsin. Its primary purpose is to create a small gap or channel between your home’s cladding (siding, stone, or brick) and the wall itself.
This gap allows for air circulation, which helps to:
Dry Moisture: Any water that gets behind the siding can dry out quickly, preventing mold or rot.
Improve Durability: Prolongs the life of your cladding and wall assembly by reducing water exposure.
Protect Against Condensation: Stops vapor from accumulating behind the siding due to temperature differences.
For this project, we’re using a batten system to create the rain screen. Here’s a step-by-step of how it’s installed:
Create Vertical Gaps: We installed vertical battens directly over the exterior insulation. These battens create channels for airflow and allow water to escape.
Add Horizontal Battens: For the vertical siding we’re using, horizontal battens were added to provide an attachment point.
Secure the System: We used 6-inch lag bolts to ensure everything is anchored securely to the studs through the insulation.
Bug-Proof the Gap: At the base of the wall, we’re installing a screen to keep insects and pests out while maintaining airflow.
Combining exterior insulation with a rain screen offers unmatched performance:
Energy Savings: Exterior insulation cuts down on energy loss, while the rain screen prevents moisture issues that can compromise insulation.
Moisture Management: The rain screen creates a buffer for air circulation, helping any trapped water to dry quickly.
Durability: These features extend the life of your home’s siding and structure, ensuring your investment lasts for generations.
While exterior insulation and rain screens are already required in many parts of the U.S., Wisconsin hasn’t caught up yet. However, meeting or exceeding these standards today ensures that your home is future-proof. It’s all about building better, not just meeting the bare minimum.
Exterior insulation and rain screens are two of the best ways to make your home more efficient, comfortable, and durable. At Sanctified Construction, we’re committed to incorporating these elements into every build because we know they make a difference.
