How Homes Are Built: How Door Casings Are Built (Ep 16) - Parade of Homes Wisconsin

September 21, 20233 min read

Hey everyone, it's TJ here, back with another insightful episode in our "Parade of Home" series. In our last episode, we delved deep into the intricacies of shower detailing. This time, we are shifting our focus to the art of door casing, a crucial aspect that adds finesse to your home's finish. I'm here with Cam Nelson, our expert pro in finished trim carpentry, to give you an inside look into how we ensure a seamless finish around your windows and doors. Let's get started!

The Art of Assembling Door Casings

Today, we are at our fall parade home, where Cam is busy putting together a door jam. The goal is to create a product that, once painted, looks like it's cut from a single piece of wood, with no visible line seams. Cam has a unique approach to this, and I'll let him take over to explain the process.

Step 1: Measurements and Batch Cutting

The first step in the process involves taking precise measurements for the doors and windows. Cam batch cuts all the casing components, including the heads and legs. This preparation is vital to ensure a smooth assembly process later on.

Step 2: Biscuit Slot Cutting and Assembly

Next, Cam cuts a biscuit slot at each end of the casing components. This technique facilitates easy assembly, where a biscuit is inserted into one slot, accepting the other piece and butting it down. This method ensures that the faces flush up perfectly, eliminating the need to hold them manually.

The Secret Ingredient: Hot Melt Polyurethane Adhesive

The secret to achieving a seamless finish lies in the adhesive used during the assembly. Cam uses a hot melt polyurethane adhesive, specifically designed for wood-to-wood bonding. This adhesive has a quick set time of 30 seconds, significantly reducing the wait time during assembly.

Application and Assembly

During the assembly, the adhesive is applied to one side of the casing, ensuring it gets into the biscuit joint. This process is followed by joining the two pieces together, resulting in a slight squeeze-out of the glue, which indicates a good bond. This adhesive has gap-filling properties, ensuring a seamless finish even if there are minor discrepancies in the cut.

A Finish that Stands the Test of Time

At Sanctified Homes, we prioritize quality and durability in every aspect of home construction. Our method of assembling door casings guarantees a product that won't crack or come apart over time, even as the house settles. This approach ensures that whether you are buying a starter home or building your forever home, you receive a product that stands the test of time.

Cam Nelson: The Expert Behind the Finish

Cam has been in the industry for a long time, honing his skills from a young age. His expertise ensures that the door casings in our homes are not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable.
