Welcome back to the Parade of Homes series! We've been thrilled to guide you through the intricate details of home construction. In the last episodes, we've touched upon crucial aspects like connecting walls, and the innovative use of materials. In Episode 6, we're diving deep into the importance of how subfloor sheeting is installed and why the method of attachment matters so much.
Before we delve into the advanced techniques, let's understand the basics. The sub floor sheeting acts as the foundational layer atop the floor joists. It's a primary surface upon which all interior flooring - whether carpet, hardwood, or tile - is laid.
Most builders traditionally use nails to put down subfloor sheeting. While this might seem like a straightforward choice, it's also where many go wrong. The problem with nailing? Potential squeaky floors.
At Sanctified Homes & Construction, we're all about innovation. Instead of the conventional nail, we use what's known as a scrail - a hybrid between a screw and a nail. What sets the scrail apart is its unique design. It's equipped with a Phillips head, allowing for easy removal in case of misplacements or if it sticks out from the side. This fine-tuned approach to installation not only ensures better fastening but also significantly reduces the chances of those annoying squeaky floors.
Did you know? The primary cause of floor squeaks isn’t the wood panels rubbing against each other. It's often due to the nail protruding and the wood moving against this nail when someone walks over it. The flexibility offered by the scrail, to be backed out or cut off, is what makes all the difference.
When our experts get to work, the process is systematic. First, glue is applied to ensure the sub floor sheeting adheres securely. The scrail is then used for fastening. If, for any reason, there's a miss, or a squeak is detected, the scrail can easily be backed out, ensuring flawless flooring for your home. Watch the process in action here.
While it might seem like a minor detail, the fastening method is pivotal in ensuring long-lasting comfort in your homes. It's these small details that elevate the quality of construction and differentiate a good home from a great one. As always, we at Sanctified Homes & Construction encourage everyone to raise their standard when it comes to home-building.
