Welcome back to our enlightening Parade of Homes Wisconsin series. In this seventh episode, we're unearthing the criticality of window flashing, delving deep into its significance in the home building process. As with every episode, we aim to provide insights that aren’t just foundational, but transformative.
Before we get into the core topic, let's introduce LP Weather Logic. This integrated plywood sheeting comes with a unique coating that eliminates the need for traditional Tyvek or house wraps. The result? Enhanced protection for homes against moisture and the elements.
Historically, tape has been the preferred choice for flashing windows. At Sanctified Homes & Construction, we're always on the hunt for better building solutions. This led us to the method of using liquid flashing, a technique that offers superior protection against potential water damage.
The process of applying liquid flashing, while meticulous, ensures impeccable results. Here’s a look:
Cleanliness is paramount. Before applying the seam and flashing sealant, it's vital to ensure a smooth, debris-free surface. This pretreatment step is essential for the sealant to adhere effectively and last longer.
For a refined look, marking the perimeters with tape results in a neat finish. This aids in applying the liquid flash uniformly around the window.
Using a battery-powered DeWalt sausage gun tube, the liquid flash is run around the window's exterior. Once the primary layer is on, it's then spread evenly with a putty knife.
After allowing the liquid flashing to cure, what you have is a rubber-like barrier that's highly resistant to water intrusion. Unlike tape that can potentially let water seep behind it, liquid flashing offers an airtight seal. This means that even if water manages to breach the siding, the window sills and underlying boards remain protected against rot and water damage.
While liquid flashing is undeniably one of the most effective methods for sealing windows, it's also a pricier option. However, when considering the long-term benefits and reduced risks of water damage, many homeowners and builders deem the cost worthwhile.
At Sanctified Homes & Construction, our mission has always been to push boundaries and raise the standards of home building. Whether it's innovative solutions like liquid flashing or our meticulous attention to detail, we're dedicated to delivering the very best.
